This is the first album from Neutral Milk Hotel, a cult indie-folk/rock group. The album is almost entirely written and performed by singer-songwriter Jeff Mangum, and features a low-fi recording aesthetic. He is notable for his surrealist lyricism and songwriting, as well as his distinct high-pitched, nasal voice.
Although On Avery Island is a fine album in its own right, it is often overshadowed by its sequel, In the Aeroplane Over The Sea.
